Hi & yes I used to ride Solos JAP Plus various Sidecar outfits here is my very Last ride, & yes I was winning again at Carmarthen Park just to walk away & brag about it.
That Machine leading is under myself and the late great Kenjo, Ken Jones without whom I wd have won nothing, that machine I recovered after again it had been living in a pile of Scrap in Ceredigion when myself & Janet had been living at Dubai for 10 years, the machine was found & by John Reeves & was actually given back to me by him, it is still not pretty & lives near the bar in my front room, never ridden, it has been there once.

Initially the frame was found in a mangled state at a Nevilles Dock Scrapyard at Llanelli, bought for a tenner from Myer Davies there who thought he was ripping me well off .

Horns from here are restored with new Wax Impregnated Gaskets, all traces of Rust removed, antirust coating applied internally.
REINFORCEMENT TO TERMINALS INTERNALLY, only snag is I choose whom I will work for & rush nothing..
Stainless Studs used to hold Terminal Blocks, New Fillister where Points are held by such, new Stainless Washers, plus the CORRECT sized nuts (Chromed) which were used on LUCAS items to allow smaller spanners to be used causing less damage to adjacent Horn casing paint when fitting to brackets.
There are many different types of LUCAS ALTETTES from 1930 to 1963, always better to have what was fitted to your machine than a Foreign device which does not last long or even resemble any particular period type.

The Atlantic Bulb Box. Spare bulb storage box for all makes of classic or vintage car that use bulbs shaped like hot air balloons! This box is made of pressed brass lined with blue material to protect the bulbs.
There are spaces for 2 headlight bulbs and 3 tail lights. It is in reasonable condition with no serious dents, but will need re-lining if you intend to use it.

The laugh is that some poor 'repro' producer had Goofed by sending the wrong brackets to get COPIED for Lucas, (He found out the proper ones after delivery & payments were made!) Sold on ebay as LUCAS 700168 BRACKETS they are not atall like LUCAS ones but are the longer Clearhooters 180/2 ones, even advertised on EBAY as Lucas 700168, the poor guy has to get rid of them, & seems to be pushing them to unsuspecting enthusiasts is being done by several ebay dealers who do know, but do not care as long as they get paid.

Pressed steel bodied HF317 & 318 not shown is from 1931 HF934 plus 935 from early 1935 & Both types have FLUTED DOME NUTS. There are HF 310 & 311 etc from earlier periods.
LUCAS ALTETTES> with oldest at the top listed as HF1234 were used on different models machines different period from 1937 to 1962 inc so Repro items can not quite make your machine look as it should. That Alloy MAZAK Bezel shown bottom left is a quite scarce item now due to it's fragility, it does aid originality, machine value plus reality differences though. If you have even a dud broken or wrong ALTETTE for your machine you could trade it in against the real thing. (A few dollars more than Repro or even less in some cases)

The Actual Logo shows at the head of this page 3 types of Horns often confused by enthusiasts. Top left shows the HF 1234 Lucas Altette with a steel ripple disc for Swinging arm BSA and other post 1954 machines, top right is an earlier also HF 1234 Lucas Altette 1939 to 1953. both use the LUCAS 700168 Bracket. Lower item is the Clearhooters 180/A Some enthusiasts try to use the Clearhooters 180/2 Bracket as used on Velocettes with the Clearhooters 180/A horn used on Miller Systems machines, the 180/2 is longer, has a different profile & does not truly accept a Lucas item since the metal holes have to be opened weakening the bracket. Neither Lucas horn or Clearhooters bracket is really interchangeable for the other. The picture below shows CORRECT ORIGINAL horns for Velocette Venom Viper MAC MSS & K series road machines as examples. Just above the Clearhooters 180/A is the STAINLESS STEEL SET OF 2BA REPLACEMENT FASTENERS which are exactly the pins originally fitted., These sets come at £10.50 & Postage, the BSF 3/8" chromed domes for Clearhooters & Wipac 180/A cost £3.80 plus Postage.
Top pic Views of Clearhooters 180/A Horns ABOVE are the ones used on Swinging Arm Velocettes & others using Miller & Wipac Systems from 1936 & will show differences between these and Lucas ALTETTE!, The shorter Bracket down is the type to be used on Girder Forks Velocette & earlier rigid ones with Dowty. Paint finish used on Horns with Clearhooters is crinkle finish plus those parallels at the rear casing sides are the reason they do not get accepted in Lucas Brackets or vice versa. Clearhooters 180/2 Brackets shown are used on Velocettes swinging arm machines, earlier girder forks Velocettes & some Dowty equipped Velocettes used a shorter bracket mounted at nearside lower Steering head & BOTH TYPES PLUS LUCAS ARE STOCKED HERE. (I use Stainless Steel cheese head BEZEL pins to replace the brass chromed ones which are often found in use to be too weak.)
Where & when MILLER SYSTEMS are on machines (Douglas Draganfly which used black not chrome fronts) plus pre WW2 & 1945 1946 Royal Enfields, Velocettes from 1936 AJS 1949 Ariel Plunger suspension Twins Machines plus Vincent HRD & Brough Superior Montgomery Stevens Excelsior Zenith & many more on Miller Systems, there were no dome head pins like Lucas around the Bezel & a great many Clearhooters even had the centre dome nut coated in wrinkle finish paint. (Thanks to Brian May [not the Queen guitarist!] of Cheshire for the Pic)
These Clearhooters would be fitted not LUCAS, the items shown here can be sold or trade part ex your old one in, whether dud incomplete or possibly of a different type or make.
Below (on the left)we see the Lucas 701639 later 703396 Bracket as used on Sunbeam S7 & S8 plus the Morris Minor Split Screen car and even the undercarriage locking warning horn on the Canberra Aircraft (24 Volts), look closely & you will see the Clearhooters bracket on the right (for Douglas Dragonfly etc) has smaller 2BA holes to be opened out if u try to fit Lucas's 1/4" BSF fasteners, along with the inner curve difference, this leaves less metal & the breakage is FAR more frequent.
These two LUCAS ALTETTE, in the picture immediately below are just finished, tested & put online, original items for post 1953 Ariel AJS BSA Gold Star plus others inc. Panther Norton Matchless, one has been made in 12 Volts form for converted machines and the other 6 Volts, can accept duds incomplete & broken or wrong ones, these will be online until sold. The correct LUCAS 700168 for BSA Gold Star etc & fasteners used are in the picture. THE OTHER 3 DIFFERENT TYPES OF Fronts for THE VERY SAME PERIOD FOR DIFFERENT MACHINE MODELS ARE IN THE PICTURE BELOW IT. The Flat Disc goes on Rigid & Plunger BSA etc & the rippled steel disc one on Swinging Arm BSA Machines, with no LUCAS ALTETTE stamped on the Bezel all used in 1955. (see BSA 1955 Catalogue)
One Only shown below of a finished Vincent 1000 Original horn converted to 12 Volts with the correct Lucas 700168 Bracket, (£145 for hooter £15 for bracket, plus postage) this works well & is antirust coated inside. Your own hooter whatever state would be considered as trade in for this. The lower of the 2 pics above above shows the rear as per spares list and the frontal view is in the darker picture above it, some stainless fittings (studs) have been used. THE VINCENT 1000 is the only one of the ALTETTES which has the terminals at 12 o'clock position, all other Altettes are for 6 o'clock terminals. (SEE PERIOD VINCENT 1000 SPARES LIST BELOW)
These Domes for HF 317 & HF 934 Lucas Altette 1930 to circa 1949 Fluted Domes 1/4" BSF Plus the LUCAS HF 1441 horn Brackets, the Pre 1945 WD BSA M20 Brackets and the later LUCAS 6H Bracket, which is made here slightly thicker & stronger than orig. ones which tend to break.
The 3 pics immediately above show the front & rear view of a Genuine 1930 to mid 1930's LUCAS ALTETTE HF 317 (Chromed 318) with restored original moving coil internals, 12 Volts one shown (with 2 types of the fitting pins to attach it to it's bracket, antirust coated inside with new wax paper gaskets it makes that inimitable 'period' sound. This goes on MG Riley & Morgan plus BSA & other cars or can be used on machines converted to 12 Volts since the 6 Volts 317 was exactly the same in appearance, you will note this with it's brass specification plate etc. is far nicer than the Asian made repro currently being offered, there is perhaps nothing really like the real thing?. This is the rear view of the only genuine one remaining here POA. the 934 Lucas from 1935 onwards also used these Period Domes still available here whilst stock lasts @ £14.45 per set plus Postage £2.95 within UK.
These are (top right) an original 6 Volts LUCAS 1140 as fitted to BSA Royal Enfield New Imperial from 1936 to 1939 & Rudge in 1936. (top left is the Original 12Volts version produced in that period, now for use on electrical systems converted to 12 Volts.
The Lower 2 are Lucas HF 1441 post WW2 which have the castings carrying a "C1 to C9" marking on all 1440 & 1441 bodies (only to identify the casting line when produced) these 2 shown are converted to work on 12 Volts. these were used in 6 Volts form on Ariel Douglas Triumph AJS Matchless Norton & Triumph plus Vincent 'D' series plus inside BSA machines after 1958 with Nacelles after the "Frog's head headlamp assembly, these items here are the last in stock POA.
The SMALLER 2 Silver ones at upper left are Lucas 8H which came in to relace the Lucas HF 1441 1959/60 Black Chunk you can see at lower left, LUCAS 8H 6Volts when available here are £95 plus postage or £86 & Post for restoring a item sent in to be restored. Right, Lucas HF 1849 was on the Royal Enfield Crusader & Meteor Minor & such again until replaced with that little silver Lucas 8H, chrome trimmed restored Lucas HF 1849 are scarce & one only here at pres @ £96 plus postage. (Black 12Volts LUCAS HF 1849 were standard original horns on Austin Healey Sprite 'Frogeyes') Most can be altered to cope with 12 Volts where needed, naturally it takes work. POA) Voltage alterations there can not be subject to Warranty. BELOW YOU CAN SEE THE ONES BEING RESTORED HERE< SOME ARE ALREADY ORDERED & SHALL GO OUT WHEN FINISHED, there is always a waiting list.
Top left you see one original restored 6Volts Clearhooters Horn for LE Velocette, the other 2 are AS YET UNRESTORED ones for 40's to& 1950's 2 strokes Villiers & BSA Bantam de Luxe & Velocettes large singles which were equipped with engine & gearbox fairing as well as Triumph T20 & T15 Cub & Terrier along with the smaller range of Velocette Valiant Vogue Viceroy etc etc. THE BRACKETS FOR THE CLEARHOOTERS HORNS AMOUNT ROUGHLY 14 DIFFERENT TYPES, CHECK OUT WHERE & HOW THE ITEM FITS ON YOUR MACHINE & I HAVE ALL THE BRACKET TYPES HERE TO FIT. Below you see restoration underway, (3 have been sold already) The lower picture shows progress & the Chrome is to be added with stainless steel pins & then clear laquer coating on painted parts plus the wires for the ones with internal connections. The Bottom picture shows the finished items, with wires & New Old Stock Rubber Grommets, the top right item in the bottom pic has been prepared for 12 Volts converted machine & is not a 'PUSH INTO RUBBER GROMMET TYPE'.
Two aluminium LUCAS 5H, horrid squeaky things but quite rare. The Upper Black one is a Lucas 6H, not for a motorcycle but for Mini Minors etc, the terminals at rear must not be single ones, (the single is for earth return on cars, so remember to have 2 terminals for use on bikes or when you wire it up it will simply sound away). 12V with bracket Lower black item is the Clearhooters HF 80 FOR BSA & TRIUMPH Triples plus BSA & Triumph Twins & singles of the triple cylinder era.
Brackets Below also used on 60's 70's BSA Norton & Triumphs using Lucas 6H Horns. Blowed if I know which though, these were for Mike Allen's rebuilds of the NEC Burned machines.
Above u can see 3 different post WW2 period types of ORIGINAL LUCAS Altette bodies, there also are 4 other DIFFERENT types of fronts to add to these (without the 4 types of different pre WW2 Altettes in shapes threads, materials plus forms).
Restorers purchasing "Repro" are basically stuck with trying to find "Repro which????".
As you well know, imitations of original paintings & works of fine art are far less ACTUAL VALUE than true original parts which have been on the real machines and travelled those miles too.
I suppose it is a case of what you can or even care to afford to actually bring originality to your machine and it's resale value, or use Asian items you hope nobody knows or notices which however are not really even copies, just vague low quality cheap lookalikes, you will VERY rarely find a Repro dealer taking original bits in as trade ins whereas here, enough traded in plus exchanged dud and broken bits get you the real thing restored thing of originality & value. Nothing like the real thing or so I am told?, 'even cheaper in some cases than "Repro".
Up to you what you want, plenty of repro out there but real originals are always far scarcer & better to improve investment machine/vehicle value in years to come.
British items, British Restored which were on the Brit. Bikes 0riginally are really an option.
Fitting 'foreign' down in price items which are cheap labour produced, not even 'nearlies, in semblance or quality to what is really required.
The option is yours, do you prefer a quality down to price & faint likeness, plus squeaky noise of a REPRO, as they hopefully describe a foreign item to try to adorn a Brit Bike?, OR THE REAL THING? look at the different types from the batch now being finished, a few dollars more & you get real ones with opportunity to trade in yours broken & duds against it, I know of nobody that repairs 'Repro' items, they rust inside & out RAPIDLY. The top ones show the front plus rear differences of late 1937 Altettes HF 1234 onwards to their 1951 end of production.
Next down is the 1949 to 1951 model HF 1234 (Model spec. AGAIN)which without warning on occasions wd carry the Mazak Alloy Bezel plus wrinkled paint front disc and 2 piece front dome nut, note the rear body difference. (The Mazak bezel came as a result of Nickel being scarce & Governments needing it as the only filter element for PLUTONIUM!, 'in warhead production until policy changed & the Copper Nickel then Chrome layers could return with motorcyclists hardly knowing why their Chrome reappeared. (The Mazak bezels were used intermittently without warning by Lucas on 1234 & 1235 horns from 1948 to 1953.
The lower 4 show the TRUE types available plus used from post 1953, the ones with steel ripple disc wd be on Swinging Arm BSA & others, & wd have no LUCAS or Altette words on the bezel since this was cheaper to manufacturers plus looked as if they had produced their own part rather than 'bought in'.
Only in 1954 did some bezels get produced with LUCAS ALTETE, these were sold as proprietary items & only appeared on Panthers after being bought 'over the counter' directly, Words Disappeared after 1954.
The Chromed bezels for rippled disc Altettes are normally enthusiast chromed steel bezels which were on Split Screen Morris Minors as non Chromed HF 1235 or other machinery. I hope that clears enthusiasts confusion re Words on some bezels not others.
